Kabaddi Player Murder Case: Main Accused Killed in Police Encounter in Mohali
Police said that Karan “Defaulter” Pathak, the main shooter in the murder of kabaddi player-turned-promoter Rana Balachauriya, was killed in an encounter in Mohali after he escaped from police custody. Pathak had fled on Friday night despite being handcuffed, triggering a massive manhunt.
Around seven hours later, the prime accused was tracked near Airport Road close to his ancestral village in Kharar. When challenged by the police, he allegedly opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. Pathak was critically injured in the exchange.
Pathak had been arrested in Bengal on Monday and was being held at the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) staff headquarters. Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans said that Pathak complained of chest pain on Friday night.
A police team was taking him to the hospital when he allegedly got into a scuffle with the officers, causing the vehicle to hit a road divider. As the policemen stepped out of the vehicle, Pathak reportedly broke free and escaped.
Police later received information that Pathak was hiding near his ancestral village in Mullanpur. When a team reached the location and tried to surround him, he allegedly attempted to flee and started firing at the police.
According to police, the accused fired six to seven rounds, one of which hit a police personnel. In the retaliatory firing, Pathak was shot.
